Toonami Says Farewell to Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network's Action Programming Block Bids a Final Goodbye

Toonami, Cartoon Network
For the last eleven years, Toonami has brought action cartoons and anime to Cartoon Network and its viewers. It unexpectedly said goodbye on September 20, 2008.

The Toonami programming block debuted in March, 1997 airing for a couple of hours in the afternoon to catch the after school viewers. It featured classic action cartoons such as Thunderbirds, Voltron, Batman the Animated Series, and a new series: The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. As Toonami's popularity grew, so did its shows and hours. It started to air in the late evenings as well as the afternoon. Then action anime like Dragonball Z, Robotech and Sailor Moon were added.

Soon Toonami became a solid action anime block. This concept helped develop Adult Swim, a programming block that featured anime for an older viewership than found in the afternoons. Toonami still remained popular with the teen and pre-teen crowds. The popularity increased as Toonami brought in popular anime such as Naruto and Zatch Bell.

Anime Phasing Out of Cartoon Network

However, over time, Cartoon Network slowly started to phase anime out of its viewing lineup in Adult Swim. As talented and creative North American cartoons developed, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim picked them up. What used to be Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Trigun became Venture Brothers, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, Robot Chicken, and Moral Orel with a dab of Bleach and Shin Chan. Toonami lost its afternoon spot to air Chowder, Camp Lazlo, and Johnny Test and aired strictly in the late evenings. But then what was once a block consisting of four to six shows shrunk to two to four.

Downward Decline of Toonami

In addition, CN started to get complaints that it was a "loud" network. The complaints began to avalanche. To appease the masses, Toonami was moved to Saturday nights, so that the network would have just one "loud" segment a week.

Then when Naruto moved into its extensive filler episodes, the popularity of the show and ultimately Toonami dropped just as Naruto had over in Japan.

Instead of revamping Toonami into just action cartoons and anime instead of action anime, a decision was made somewhere down the line to close Toonami altogether. Cartoon Network was seeing a rise in ratings for its newer shows such as The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Total Drama Island, Chowder, and Ben 10: Alien Force. Also, since Adult Swim was doing so well with the ratings, and the same crew working on Adult Swim also produced Toonami, CN decided to let them focus on Adult Swim and let go of Toonami.

And so, with no real big announcement, Toonami said goodbye to Cartoon Network on September 20, 2008 after the last Toonami show signed off. Tom, Toonami's MC, bid the final farewell and then blasted off into the great beyond with a final "Bang."

Jetstream Online Will Keep the Toonami Shows

With the end of Toonami does not end all of Cartoon Network's action shows or even anime. All of Cartoon Network's action programming can be found on Toonami Jetstream online. Toonami fans can find all of their favorite Toonami shows such as Naruto, Blue Dragon, and Hikaru no Go available for viewing on the Jetstream website. (One wonders how popular this will be since there is already YouTube, but time will tell.) In addition, CN still airs other action shows such as Transformers the Animated Series, Pokemon, and Bakugan Battle Brawlers.

Goodbye, Toonami. You will be missed by action cartoon and anime fans, particularly the nostalgic ones that have been with you since 1997.

omg!! I grew up watching and falling in love with Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and midnight InuYasha, Cowboy Bebop, etc shows!!! They were the best of the cartoon network and will always be best in my heart. I think they did a horrible mistake by stopping it altogether though. hmm... now Cartoon network would be just for kids or pre-teens instead of attracting some of the teen and even older teens who are anime-fans.

A broadcasting company should not just end toonami like that. Instead, CN should have notified us that toonami would end. I knew it was going to happen due to the crappy hour of naruto fillers, ben ten, and samurai jack reruns. I am not really surprised that it was canceled but I am surprised that it was so sudden. I loved toonami and the memories it gave me. I recall when it first came out, I was in the second grade. Now I am a senior in high school suffering from trauma.

This truly sucks. I remember coming home from school when I was seven. I had just moved into a different state which I am still in, just a few miles from where I started. I had come home from school everyday and flicked on the TV (not to the enjoyment of my mother) and watched toonami. I loved it. I would watch just about anything they showed (Youthful interest I guess). After every series showed its last episode, I would get sad because I had gotten used to it being there. Over the past couple years Ive had a Tivo so i just recorded all the shows and watched them whenever i wanted. NOTHING was as good as the original toonami shows as stated in this persons post a couple above mine. It has just always been there and now i am sad to see it go. I plan on looking up groups or methods of getting it reinstated, but I have no idea how it will go. We'll just have to wait for the best or welcome the new. I hate this new &#$% they have in place of toonami now. RIP toonami- you will be missed.... Hope to see it again one day.

Man, something like this, ye gotta say yer piece. This will be missed ever so that it will. I think the Amazing Grace via Bagpipes, sums up appropriate good bye tune for this one.

Tis true, at 2005, it started to suffer, the exact time which Naruto was aired (coincidence? /sarcasm). For the life of me, can't fathom why they would ruin a good thing, this Toonami, buy flooding it with crap. Not to mention taking off of good shows, ones that never got finished. Such as Knights of the Zodiac, or Rave Master. Heck, I knew this was going to happen eventually, but to face it now, it just surprising to hear all the same.

As the quote from this article: "Goodbye, Toonami. You will be missed by action cartoon and anime fans, particularly the nostalgic ones that have been with you since 1997."

--RIP Toonami:1997-2008

May we someday see you on Boomerang, with your shows, in all of their former glory.

All the same. Its gives you something to look forward to at the end of the week. I'm really getting tired of the Naruto fillers. AND I really don't think they will be showing Shippuden on Toonami or Cartoon Network at all. If you've seen them..Sai is alittle um...>_> NOT good for kids. LOL! I'd LOVE them if they showed Shippuden on Adult Swim. OMG! That would make me so happy. :D

This news just about breaks my heart. I started watching Toonami with my twin nephews when they were seven years old. They adored Tom and I grew to like him also. Now, as teenagers they really enjoy Naruto and many of the other anime and manga shows that used to be on CN. So if CN has dumped these shows I guess we are free to no longer watch or support their other programming? No more CN in our home.

As a kid to a teen I had a very large case of insomnia. So, at the late hours of the night i would sneak downstairs, and watch tv. That was when i was introduced to toonami. I love it! I thought wow, these shows are amazing, intelligent, and more over had something creative and influential to say. Now, i know that seems to go a bit far, but if one were to watch some of the crap that CN shows now or days, you can understnad what i mean. I know, sure, those late night shows on Toonami have violence, but that's why they were shown late at night, and I'd rather be introduced to violence(which is prevalent in the world anyway), than the incredible stupidity that show now on tv(which is also, sadly, prevalent as well). Now don't get me wrong, Adult Swim is funny, but Toonami was great because it introduced material from other regions of the world. I mean, anime is truly under appreciated in the US.
I think that's why I also had an appreciation for Cartoon Network, because they were willing to introduce that stuff. It wasn't the happy go lucky crap that Nickalodeon and Disney portrayed.
It's a real shame.

i hate the new C.N. all the shows are idiodic! Ex.Chowder, and the marvelous misadventures of flapjack.these shows are for kids ages 6-10!If you ask me Cartoon Network is running down a hill with sharp rocks at the botom! I bet that in a couple years it will seis to exist! Then they will regret getting rid of all their awesome shows!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are an employee of cartoon network please make sure that the person that is excepting all these lame shows actually has a brain! because if you dont get better shows i warn you that this is the begginig of the end!!!!!!

lol, get used to it. In the UK the same thing happened last year. Its far to exciting and good to be kept on air. We lost anime Central, Toonami, CNX, and the anime section of cartoon network was replaced. Our country doesnt know what people want. Cartoon network has left the 12-16 year old viewers for dead.

Hello, I am an aspiring writer and cartoonist who is considering animation and I wish to pay my dues to the block that got me interested in anime and manga, my art style(I am American though). This allowed me to enjoy things such as Naruto, DBZ, Gundam(all series, seriously), and Yu Yu Hakusho. I believe that Toonami left all other stations in the dust by airing, ableit edited, anime. It let children, like me, who didn't want to constantly watch slapstick with something animated on TV. Although it died a shadow of its former glory, it still had some of the better dubbing.
Ben 10 was a thought child of American and Japanese animation and was quite entertaining in my opinion. To help combat the menace of "Flapjack" and "Chowder," along with my loyalty to the channel, I am trying to make an action show for them. I think the former kid/preteen-teen/adult format helped them(Cartoon Cartoons,Toonami, and Adult Swim respectively) to become successful. Now, in an age of bad cartoons, we must all do something, be it not watch CN, the internet, [adult swim], etc. We shall never get in. I hope I can create a show that is accepted. To be honest, I think anime has made me a better writer, where else would you find plots in children's TV. RIP Tom...Bang

When Naruto Shippuden hits the air, they should bring back toonami!!! or at least PLEASE STOP SHOWING 1 EPISODE OF NARUTO A WEEK! for gods sake! its gunna b like 4 more months until it ends just because of the 1 ep a week thing. not 2 mention all the movies they've been showing instead of episodes. Toonami made cartoon network and the US naruto! they dont even call naruto a CN show, or an AS show! so wat is it?!?!?

Rumors say they will make a toonami channel. ik that these rumors have yet to be confirmed but a toonami lover I will believe in them. They surely will realize that ppl r gonna stop watching cause of no toonami. I'm 11 and was there in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. I even know wat a good tv show is. wat anime is. not ben 10 or star wars.

I will always miss Toonami. I remember when I used to come home from school and would just sit down and watch Toonami. That was really the only thing really on cartoon network I used to watch. I started to watch it when I was 6 and I just cant believe it is gone. I remember when they changed it to Saturdays and replaced it with that maguzi @#$^&!. I was so freak en upset. Then they started to air naruto. I'm not going to lie I love naruto. But I knew this was going to happen when they started to air the fillers they suck, they should have just skipped to naruto shippuden. All my memories will be with Toonami. Rip-Toonami

i will miss toonami so much. it was my favorite part of cn. now thats it gone i dont know what to do anymore. when i first noticed that it wasnt airing anymore i thought theyd put it back on and they were just trying to introduce some new shows or something and that they needed time. but then they started showing less and less of it. then they showed those movies. man im so upset this really sucks. i really loved toonami. every week i couldnt wait for saturday night to come to see toonami. naruto, blue dragon, dragonball Z, zatch bell, one piece, awesome shows. now they only have naruto left and theyll probably remove it to. the day they do that, is the day i stop watching cn. but if there really was a toonami channel that would be awesome so im hoping for that. FAREWELL TOONAMI!

i agree with all of you, toonami will be missed so much. I remember when i was only 7 when i started to notice toonami.i wasn't very appealed to all of it at first but as i got older, i seemed to watch it more and moreeeee. Imean toonami was the only thing on tv that really showed good popular anime.I remember how i watched one peice and zatch bell, even MAR. And when naruto came on i was even more into watching it. now i cant even watch a real decent naruto episode. now naruto is only on satudays with only one episode hopefully. sometimes movies replace it. Fudging action flicks. Last week i was ex cited to watch a new naruto and then i found out it was a very old episode, the one where he meets jiraya for the first time. i am very mad and i almosted cried when i saw their last airing. please Cartoon Network find it in your hearts to bring toonami back As said RIP toonami hope to see you back soon.

Ehh... To bad I really enjoyed anime. I personally felt like I was one of the people who watched it when kids that watched it was called un-cool. 1995 when you really had to work hard at watching other national shows was increadibly hard to watch. I can't even count how many GF's I made intertaining them with stuff nobody could share. Awe fond memories. 1997 I remember those days as well. When popularity started to grow and I could force spoilers onto all the new fans. lol. But, I can't say I didn't see this comming. I learned 3 different languages. The largest being anime nations. Japan, Korea, Chinese, and English being my First language. My suggestion to you all is to learn more languages. And you will find it much better. Cause then you can delve into new CULTURES and study many new things. Let me tell you this its better than a weekend of football followed by Monday Night B.S. Madness. Anyways, good bye wonderful memories.

Dear, cartoon network
Why in the world would you do something that would bring all of your viewers in such a outrage? Ever since you've canceled toonami all of of your shows have been really awful. You should really put them back on the air, I mean I grew up with toonami, dragon ball z, dragonball gt, naruto and many other animes. You really should have thought that out before you did that. I really hate that hoorible idea and have lost most interest in any shows or advertising of cartoonnetwork. I used to be a really intersted and devoted fan and viewer, interseted in every toonami show. Nowadays I only turn on cartoonnetwork when adult swim comes on. You just turned cartoonnetwork into a little kids station.I am really disapointed with you cartoonnetwork I really hope you come back to your senses before its to late sincerely, A very diapointed viewer P.S I really hope you come back to your senses

I've watch Toonami since i was at the late age of 3 and watched it devolope. My brother watched it as well even though he's younger than me. I remember watching Toonami...DBZ, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and even Hamtaro at a young age. I've seen it devolope through the years with the new shows like One Piece, Bobo-Bobo-Bo-Bobobo,Yugiho Gx, and especially the one anime show where I learned to really see the real aspects of anime, my favorite anime show in the world,Naruto. I remember the order of wihich anime came first in the line up. Toonami was the best...no is and will be the best even though it's gone our memories of Toonami will never disappear. So you think you can go and judt get rid of Toonami. You already took away Toonami Jetsrteam. Toonami...I wish it was back on. So all generations can join in all the good times you brought. I will not say farewell to Toonami. TOONAMI 4EVER!!!!!!!!

Naruto hasnt come back so I started watching them in subbed and now I got to wait at 10:00 pm so I could watch something decent in adultswim. So getting rid of toonami was prapobly the dumbest thing cartoon network did so now I want to see how theyl be able to get their rating up by showing stupid cartoons that now appear in CN.

Oh Gosh, I am so disappointed in Cartoon Network. Really. I respected them so much for introdoucing Japanese culture, which is REALLY underappreciated in the US, to the youth. I grew up with animes like Sailor Moon, DBZ, Pokemon, etc. Toonami was what introdouced me into anime like Deathnote and Bleach. I would always look forward to watching these shows but then my family moved into a new house and my mom took off the cable.

So I compromised. I watched Naruto online in Japanese even though I appreciate the dub a lot as well. I borrowed old tapes from my friends. But now I've got cable again. And the first day it was installed, I immediately turned to Cartoon Network and nowhere did I see my beloved old anime shows. I'm glad that they're still dubbing Naruto even though THE EPISODES ARE NOWHERE TO BE SEEN. I'd totally love it if they put Naruto Shippuden on.

I know that they lost a lot of fans during the fillers but I've been surfing the net and there are SO many people waiting for the show to come back on. I mean Chowder and Flapjack are just feeding children total crap and it gives the impression that it's aimed towards 6-10 year olds.

Anime was popular with pre-teens and even some older teens. For me, it was the best of Cartoon Network and will always stay in my heart as fond childhood memories. It was a horrible mistake for CN to take it off. It's a terrible shame for the youth of today to miss out on a lot of what I got to enjoy.

And because Naruto Shippuden might be a bit too...explicit for children, they should totally put it on Adult Swim. Like someone before my comment said, Sai is not very good for children. LOL. But. I'm still super sad about the whole Toonami thing. SHAME ON YOU CARTOON NETWORK!!1

Well since CN took Toonami off you'd think someone would make a station just for anime to attract anime lovers, japanese fans, and people who just want to watch something other than 'little kid cartoons'. I can't stand the cartoons my little sisters watch . . . it's like watching hell burst into flame, then freeze over and repeat. Their so predictable! There is nothing in them that will take you by suprise! I grew up watching Naruto, Yu-gi-o, Prince of Tennis, and Bleach. AND not only am I a anime-loving-freak I aam also someone who likes watching some good quality TV. I mean seriously someone needs to make an ALL anime channel. I'd donate to that company in a heart beat.

You know, I always enjoyed Toonami. I remember the first day of Toonami with all of those classic shows, while I was growing up in elementary shows. I loved Sailor Moon, Classic Pokemon, Dragonball Series, etc. while growing up into my teenager years. I stopped watching it, after the Dragonball Series, but came back when Naruto appeared on the airwaves. I actually enjoyed some of the newer animes. Now, Cartoon Network pulls the plug on Toonami?! Seriously, Cartoon Network is on a downhill slide of being pulled from the airwaves.

Reasons:
1) Toonami was the MAIN source of Cartoons / Animes.
2) They shown movies on Fridays, especially the Sailor Moon Movie to end the series.
3) Toonami is more for Pre-teens and Teenagers.

What'll probably happen with Cartoon Network in the future:
-Probably lose Pokemon sometime in the next few years.
-Probably go into serious bankrupt because of their decisions.

While we're on this topic, they just recently got rid of Naruto Shippuden and gave it away to Disney XD. Cartoon Network just got a big bitch-slap to the face from Disney XD for doing that. Cartoon Network is trying to ruin children's brains by pumping them with North American Cartoons. These cartoons are completely idiotic and doesn't show the action on the airwaves. Their newer shows are mostly drama or trying to remake something from a Scooby-Doo episode, but more for children.

Adult Swim is completely stupid now, since they're removing the animes and placing more retarded show onto their airwaves. I thought Family Guy was a good idea, but they should've kept Futurama on Adult Swim. They're pushing Anime into the very-late night hours. They're doing the same damn thing, just like they done to Toonami. Anime will disappear from Adult Swim within the next year or two.

I wish Cartoon Network gets bought out by some other company, that'll bring back the image of Toonami and Cartoon Network. Adult Swim becomes more of an Anime Funland again, and Toonami can be brought onto the airwaves again.

i will forever miss toonami. i remember coming home and my sisters would already be home from high school and be infront of the Tv watching sailor moon. i would wait for that to be over so that i could watch reboot. i loved that show. i don't think that toonami will be gone for too long. just until they find a new MC. if you watch the last broadcast of toonami, he say "until we meet again" and that's why i think that toonami will come back. It wasn't cartoonnetwork that gained the viewers, it was toonami and its amazing shows. if you think about it, the channel should have taken off the other shows and make the channel the Toonami channel because that is what we wanted to watch. so please bring Toonami back and revive the viewers from this horrible turn that cartoonnetwork has taken.

Thank you.
R.I.P. TOONAMI

Its a shame that Toonami is gone, but that was just the first 2hrs of each Saturday night. Now, EVERY Saturday night has been endless anime reruns. Why have there been no new anime series? Every now and then I stop by adultswim.coms schedule page, to see its all still old reruns, with more and more anime replaced with american "morals based" cartoons. This used to be the channel I watched more than any other. It seems that day will never be again...
